Current Weather Threat...

(2:00pm Tuesday) If you watched my forecast at 5 or 6 Monday and remember me talking about the "X factor" in today's weather, you'll see that it has come in to play this afternoon. If you missed it... I'll fill you in.

There's a deep area of moisture that developed over the past 3 hours just to our Southeast. And it is stealing all the moisture from what was once a potent line of showers approaching the Pine Belt. As a result, our coastal counties and parts of Alabama have had to deal with most of the rain.

As of now a Severe T-Storm watch box remains in place until 5:oopm. The National Weather Service is hesitant to cancel it because of an small impulse of storms over south central Louisiana. As of now, that appears to be the only existing threat of severe weather to Pine Belt. I'll keep you posted...

-Nick

Severe Thunderstorm Watch

A severe thunderstorm "WATCH" is in effect for much of our viewing area until 5:00 PM. Some thunderstorms could reach severe limits this afternoon. This weather system is expected to pass through our area early this evening taking the severe threat eastward into Alabama. Another storm system on Thursday could be a little stouter and may prompt the issuance of tornado watches for our viewing area. Rex

Active Spring Weather Pattern

I'm looking at two systems this week. Tomorrow the SPC has put us under a slight risk of severe weather, which correlates with the expected instability levels within LA, MS, AL, and FL. An upper level trough is dropping down off the eastern Rockies and swinging through the Central Plains, and we are also getting a secondary 100kt upper level jet along the Gulf Coast. These two factors combined will stir our rain and thunderstorms throughout the pine belt. Overall the convective available potential energy and amount of turning in the atmosphere is less than we saw last week, but the values are still worth noting and watching. One factor many people are discussing is the impact of convection building along the gulf coast, and this development will cut-off the moisture inflow for us to see healthy storm activity. If we do see any severe weather the timing looks to be at about midday and into the evening. We'll continue to watch tomorrow's setup. The 2nd system will roll through on Thursday. Thursday looks even more impressive than Tuesday with CAPE values above 3,000 j/kg (high value) just south of Meridian (around Wayne County), but Helicity (or helical flow/turning flow) looks low to moderate in value. Rain totals could turn out less on Thursday. That's the wrap on these two systems. We will always be around to keep you aware of the severe weather. I'd love to hear your feedback at tcade@wdam.com. Thanks for reading!

More Rain in March

Well the forecast looks warm and sunny again tomorrow, but rain is likely on Tuesday to round out the month. While we are still probably thinking about the rain this past week let me bring up a viewer's email. Ken from Oak Grove measured over 10" at his house since Wednesday. Wow! I believe last week's event will definitely be remembered by many. This also teaches us large amounts of rain doesn't have to be packaged in with hurricanes alone. Please continue to email your rain totals for last week! Thanks Ken!
Ok now to this week...Rain likely on Tuesday, and most of the rain should be here during the daylight hours from midday throughout the evening. It could be a wet drive home from work on Tuesday. Our atmosphere will then clear up a tad behind the front on Wednesday, which will then quickly shift into a developing tongue of moisture stirring up more showers on Thursday. Thursday's event could package more thunderstorms as the instability looks greater for this event. Keep in touch with us as I hope you already have been! Thanks for reading our blog and feel free to write at tcade@wdam.com. Have a good week!

Sunshine Galore

The highlight of the day is definitely the sunshine! It's been awhile since we've had clear conditions across south mississippi, but we can finally breathe a sigh of relief after 4 days of active weather. I've just finished some totals from this week and here is what I've found...Since Tuesday most everyone in our area received more than 6 inches of rainfall. Wow! Here at the station our total was 6.38", which totals more than our 5.81" during Hurricane Katrina. The highest total I found was in McComb with 8.38".

As we begin to look ahead, I can tell you tomorrow will also shine bright as another beautiful day impacts the Pine Belt, but Tuesday I expect to see more rain swing into Mississippi. As of now, Tuesday's rain looks like a daytime event, and we could find some embedded thunderstorms along the line of rain. Thursday also has another shot of rain, but the exact details are a little uncertain at this time. Have a good weekend! -tcade@wdam.com

Not done yet. (Updated)

(Updated 2:00am Sat) Tornado Watch until 5AM

(1:22am Saturday) Another line of showers is still poised to push through the Pine Belt. There is a stout line forming over I - 55 and it should make it's way here in the next couple of hours. There's no watch out just yet, but one may come down shortly. I'll keep you posted.
-Nick

Supercells

(8:56pm Friday) Some supercells are pushing through the Pine Belt that contain hail and strong winds. Fortunately we have seen little rotation so far. I'm still expecting a squall line to push through later tonight. I'm in the weather office monitor these storms with the webcam on. I will cut into regular programing if we have a Tornado warning.

-Nick

A Rocky Friday Night...(Updated)

(Update 2:20pm Friday) It looks like the squall line will pass over the Pine Belt between 1:00am- 5:00am. However supercells may form ahead of the squall line.

(11:20am Friday) Alright folks, since Wednesday we have already made it through 3 rounds of heavy rain and storms...and unfortunately round 4 looks like it will be a tough one. Set aside the isolated flooding problems, which are the obvious concern. Tonight (Friday) some of us are under a moderate risk for severe weather, while the rest of us are under a slight risk for severe weather. This means that our chance for

Strong winds =40%,
Hail = 30%
Tornadoes = 10%

If you look on a radar right now at Texas and Oklahoma, you'll see some bad weather coming together. Combine that with an unstable air mass that sits on top of us and parts of Louisiana and that makes the right ingredients for some severe weather.

As we have been doing all week, we will be in the weather office covering this storm. For those of you that would like some constant information, we will also have our weather office web camera on tonight. I will be updating this blog as much as possible and you can follow myself as well as the weather office on twitter. Twitter can be set up for text messages if you choose.

Showers already breaking out across area

[5:28pm Tuesday] Yes, rain has already started falling across the area. One viewer has already reported a very small 0.02" from a brief shower this afternoon, but this is no where near the rain total we could receive within the next few days. Lets breakdown this forecast: (1) A line of rain/thunderstorms will pass through midday tomorrow and slowly push through during the evening. Some models show this line running down to the coast but I would venture to say the rain line could hunker down over the Pine Belt. (2) The front will then turn into a warm front and start moving northward across the state on Wednesday Night. The rain could likely last through Thursday morning. (3) Remember this pattern: Rain - short break - Rain - short break - Rain. That's what we could see as Thursday PM could involve a break in the rain with another shortwave moving through late Thursday night. (4) Then we could see another break Friday morning. (5) Friday could be a very intriguing day in the weather world. All of the rain within the next few days can really modify the atmosphere before Friday gets here, but some variables are lining up for another round of thunderstorms late Friday. (6) After the Friday Night rain event Saturday could slowly become clear. So Sunday might package in a nice sunny day! Rain totals across Mississippi could be between 3"-5", but some isolated areas could see more. After all of the clouds and rain I'm sure we will all look forward to a day of sunshine at the start of next week. Email me if you have questions. Thanks so much for reading! -tcade@wdam.com

Going to get soaked

The high pressure that was acting as our barrier from the rain is now gone, and the door is open for moisture. In fact, this afternoon we have seen some spotty light reflectivity on the radar all over Mississippi.

Scattered showers will be on the increase Tuesday afternoon, but I'm not expecting anything heavy or intense. Our chance for heavier rain will not start until Wednesday, and that threat will exist all the way through Friday... maybe even Saturday.

When our entire rain event is all done, I think we will put a good dent in our rain deficit. Estimates over Mississippi are from 3-8 inches. Stay tuned to WDAM and wdam.com for more. Also follow me on Twitter at http://twitter.com/WDAMNickOrtego

Cue the Rain

Weather Headlines across the nation involve snow in the Rockies and severe weather in the Central Plains, but we sit in a region of decreasing stability to setup the next few days. As I stated in the previous blog, rain is likely for Wednesday and Thursday. I expect scattered showers to run through the Pine Belt Tuesday night, and then Wednesday morning will deliver a shot of moderate to heavy rainfall. Then Wednesday night through Thursday we could see the system "sit down" in Mississippi and allow a continued chance of rain. Areas in Mississippi could receive more than 3" through Friday, but even more rain can be expected through Saturday as another low pressure system pushes through South Mississippi. Rain Rain Rain...yes that's the key word for our week outlook. -tcade@wdam.com

Wet Weather Washes 7Day Forecast

Temperatures are not a big factor in the forecast for this week. Rain is the big weather headline for our work week. As we still enjoy the glorious sunny and dry weather from our friend, high pressure system, we will soon be welcoming in some rainy days ahead. Starting Tuesday night we will see our first line of rain move through, which will last through Wednesday morning, but this system is expected to stall around the coast and provide light rain extending into Thursday. This system on Tuesday looks to bring Severe Weather for the Central Plains and Heavy to Extreme rain totals in East Arkansas and the Memphis Area. By Friday I'm noting a 2nd Low Pressure System (rainy weather) swinging through the Central Plains and dive down into the Leaf River Valley. My long-range forecast shows the 2nd system moving through by Saturday night and leaving behind a clear skies next Sunday/Monday. From Tuesday Night to Saturday Night we could easily see some places in Mississippi totalling over 5 inches of rain.

**I'm going 20% on Tuesday because only a very small amount of our viewers will experience the isolated/scattered showers.
**I'm only going 40% on Saturday because we are still a long 6 Days out from this event, and I'm also noticing a big difference in some forecast computer models.

An "AB" Weekend

AB = Absolutely Beautiful

Yes, this weekend is wonderful for any outdoor activity. I hope you have already enjoyed the weather for the last few days and will look forward to our weather trend ahead. Our weather forecast is favorable for all sides of the spectrum. If you are looking for rain then you will get the rain , but if you are looking for the sunshine you will continue to get the sunshine in the next couple of days. I expect the heaviest rain and highest rain chances to impact our mid-week forecast on Wednesday and Thursday. More than 2 inches is expected for Central Mississippi within the next 7 Days, which could involve two different disturbances running through our area. Take care and stay tuned for an in-depth 10pm forecast! Thanks for reading! tcade@wdam.com

First day of Spring

(5:48 Friday)What a great day for the 1st day of Spring. We reached 72 degrees today with a slight north breeze and plenty of sunshine. The good news is that Saturday and Sunday will be very similar...maybe just a little warmer.

Starting Monday, we will have an increased chance for rain that will peak on Wednesday as a cold front rolls through.

Enjoy the great weekend.

Dense Fog this morning

A dense fog advisory is in effect for our area unitl 9:00 am. After the fog lifts, we will have a very nice day with sunny skies and highs in the upper 70s. A weak cool front will pass through tonight reinforcing our nice weather into the weekend. Remember Friday is the first day of Spring ! Rex

Great weather to continue

(6:15 Tues) If you liked the weather Tuesday... Wednesday promises more of the same. Actually, much of our extended forecast is full of sun and 70s. The biggest event in the mid term is a weak cold front that will pass through on Thursday. However, I only expect it to bring us a few clouds and slightly cooler temps on Friday and Saturday.

How much more rain?

(9:50am) Before it's all done it looks like many locations in the Pine Belt will have received more than 2 inches of rain during our 4 day rain event. As I write this, we have received 1.5 inches at WDAM studios plus currently we have light rain outside. It looks as if the wet stuff may stick around overnight and even carry into part of Monday.

For those of you sick of the rain, the good news is that high pressure is on the way and should bring us nice conditions at least Tuesday and Wednesday.
-Nick

Friday, March 13, 2009

When and Where?

Through much of this Friday afternoon, rain in the Pine Belt has consisted of scattered light showers but not widespread rain. Just to our NW, places like the greater Jackson area have already experienced widespread rainfall. So when will we see more widespread rain here? Well right now it looks like our best bet will be the morning hours Saturday. This evening the threat of some scattered showers will continue, but rest easy cause we will not likely see any severe weather tonight. During the day Saturday, I think we will get a break from the rain... but we'll have another shot at some wet stuff late Saturday into Sunday.

Soggy Weekend

(Thursday 5:30pm) A lot of rain is headed to Mississippi Friday through Sunday and it looks like the Pine Belt will get its fair share. But early signs indicate that the majority of the rain will be a little to our North West. In fact some folks in the state may see over 5 inches. Over the three day span, we will likely see a couple inches.

Friday look for some showers in the morning, but our best bet for rainfall will be later Friday night and into Saturday.

Wind Change this afternoon

(Wed 11:50am) A very weak cold front is pushing through Mississippi right now. This front is helping keep Jackson in the 50's through midday, which is a big change from the last week of weather. Since the front is weak it is struggling to produce enough uplift for showers, but I do expect the next few days to be wet for us. Yet the biggest chance of rain will move in on Friday/Saturday. Our weekend looks wet with the majority of the extended forecast incorporating mild temps.

Rain Setting Up...

There's rain in our forecast but it's going to take a while for the bulk of it to get here. Wednesday there's a chance for some isolated showers, but don't look for a soaking. Thursday I think that we could have some showers cut through the Pine Belt during the day, while Thursday night into Friday looks to be our best bet for the wet stuff. With a lingering low pressure system near the area we may have a wet weekend as well.
-Nick

Sunday, March 8, 2009

Temp change later in the week

Warm Temps will continue to stick around through Wednesday, but it looks like things will be cooling down into the 60's by the end of the week. A stationary front will settle down in Mississippi at the same time to help aid in cloudy weather and a good shot at rain. The timing and pin-point is still difficult to nail at this point, but I will better define the "Best Chance" for rainfall boundaries during the 10pm.

I'm sure many of us will take a little bit of rain to wash off the pollen on our vehicles. But we sure need the rain to fix this dry month. tcade@wdam.com

Perfect Weather Warning

A fellow meteorologist in Birmingham, AL, Billy Murray, issued a "Perfect Weather Warning" this afternoon for the Alabama area, but I will definitely extend his warning into the Pine Belt. I hope you were able to enjoy this beautiful day with some outdoor activity. Murray also request..."And phone a friend who may not have heard this warning." Of course, we are only kidding about this "Perfect Weather Warning" but I do agree with this being a great day on the first Saturday here in March. Can you believe this past Sunday we experienced very cold conditions with temps in the 40's with a strong north wind? Or you remember the snow in Mississippi a week ago? Things have changed. A high pressure system off the east coast has pumped plenty of moisture from the Gulf along with plenty of sunshine. The same high is also helping keep the rainy weather to the Central Plains.

I've got to be honest. I spent a long time developing our 7Day forecast this afternoon. This can easily be one of the top 5 hardest long-range forecast I've had to make here. What's going on? Glad you asked because my normal materials are really not agreeing with each other, and every new computer model run seems to give me a new location, timing, and quantity. I'm talking about the chance of rain we have for the end-of-week forecast. The setup could allow for North Mississippi to see heavy rainfall while we sit with mainly dry conditions, but the other model has South Mississippi in the heavy rainfall region within the developing front. My afternoon conclusion: #1 Rain is in the forecast #2 Fronts might push through on Wednesday and Friday #3 stay posted b/c things will change with the timing and location of this rain event.

Take care and enjoy the warm weather! Thanks for reading! -Tanner Cade- tcade@wdam.com

Warmth Continues... Storms Next Week?

Thanks to a upper level ridge the warm days will continue here in the Pine Belt. In fact Friday looks warmer than today, with a high of 77. This gorgeous weather should continue through Saturday, but the clouds and rain chance will start to increase on Sunday. I'm not predicting that Sunday will be a washout, but know that there's an increasing chance for rain. It's still down the road, but Tuesday we have a pretty good shot at some storms. So stay tuned to wdam.com and now follow me on Twitter http://twitter.com/WDAMNickOrtego for text updates.

Could we have a cold March?

Usually I like to sit down and keep track of what is happening on a global scale to see what will be coming our way. In our short-term forecast we will see a nice warming trend, but things could be swinging into a cooler trend by the end of week 2 in March. This cooler trend could be coming due to some models predicting the North Atlantic Oscillation going slightly negative. This means colder air will be invited to come into the Eastern Corridor of the nation around March 13-16. But how far South will the cold air get? I'm cautious about the cold air reaching us because usually the GFS long-range model runs cold air too far south in the long term forecast. Could this model be trending to it's bias? Otherwise, the Canadian Model keeps the cold air "slightly" to the North of the Pine Belt. Also, National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center has the whole nation "Below Normal" (which is rare to see) for days March 11-17.

In the end, long term forecast are still very difficult to land even in today's great technology. Stay tuned as we will keep you updated on the long term forecast. One thing we are certain about is the warmup these next few days so please get out there and enjoy it!

Warm relief on the way

(5:30pm Monday) Those of you ready for Spring like weather, don't worry, it is still on the way. Just one more cold night and cool day to go. Tonight, the the air temperature will probably drop down to 28. Tuesday, a little warmer than today, but still cool with highs in the upper 50s. Wednesday, warm air starts to move in from the South and temps should climb into the upper 60s. Then 70s Thursday through Monday.

Week's Weather Roundup

(Sunday Night)

We definitely had a wild weekend starting Friday night with the severe weather. Then last night we had the snow event impact North and Central Mississippi. Now let's talk about the week ahead.

Starting tonight we will experience some very cold temps. A cold air mass will dominate the overnight temps into the upper 20's and slightly breezy conditions, but Monday won't be much warmer than today. Highs tomorrow will be in the lower 50's. Our trend for the week will be simliar to last week with a warming trend from day 1 to day 7 in my forecast. Stable conditions will dominate my 7Day forecast as we will slowly see a shift in Southerly wind by Wednesday.

Temps look to be in the 70's by the end of the week.. I also actually saw one model showing me 80 degrees on Friday. Take care and thanks for reading! tcade@wdam.com

Please Email Snow Pictures

Hey! I've already heard some light snow/flurries reported from some folks. North Jones County, Covington County, and even flurries in North Forrest County. Please feel free to email me your pictures at tcade@wdam.com and hopefully I can show your picture tonight during my 10p weathercast.

Thanks! -Tanner Cade (tcade@wdam.com)
