Tropics becoming active!

Tropical storm Don is forecast to move into southern Texas or extreme northeastern Mexico sometime tonight but will quickly dissipate. The storm will have no impact on our weather here in the Pine Belt.

We have a new tropical wave this morning that bears very close watching. The system is 1200 miles east of the Leeward Islands and forecasters at the National Hurricane Center feel that conditions are favorable for it to develop. If it does become a named storm it will be called Emily.

This is about the time of year that the tropics usually become active and now is a good time to have your hurricane action plans in place just in case one happens to threaten our area.

Rain chances high for today.

We have a 70% chance for showers and thunderstorms today with highs in the lower 90s. Warmer temps with with smaller chances for rain will enter the weather picture beginning on Sunday and lasting into at least the middle of next week when we could see highs in the upper 90s. Lows will continue to be in the mid 70s.

Tropical Storm Don is moving through the soutwestern gulf and poses no threat to Mississippi.

Wednesday morning weather update.

Hot and humid weather will prevail in our area today on into the weekend. We have a chance for showers and thunderstorms each afternoon and early evening but our best chances will likely be today. Highs will continue to be in the 90s and lows in the 70s.

A strong tropical disturbance in the northwestern Caribbean Sea will likely become a tropical depression or storm later today but all reliable computer models indicate that it will move towards Mexico or Texas and have little if any impact on our weather here in south Mississippi.

Tuesday weather update.

A very moist and unstable airmass continues to hang over south Mississippi and that will lead to a good chance for more showers and thunderstorms today and Wednesday. Some of the rain could be heavy at times. As we head into the latter portions of the week into the weekend our rain chances may come down a bit but conditions will continue to be muggy with highs in the 90s and lows in the 70s.

Flash flooding possible today.

Heavy rain over the weekend has left the ground very saturated in the Pine Belt and more heavy downpours are in the forecast for today. The National Weather Service in Jackson has issued a Flash Flood Watch that will begin at noon today and last into the evening hours. No severe weather is forecast but the heavy downpours could cotain a thunderstorm or two. Rain chances will remain rather high for the rest of the week. Highs will be in the 90s and lows in the 70s.

Friday Weather Update.

We have a rather good chance for mainly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms today and Saturday as the atmosphere remains hot and moist. Highs today into next week will be in the 90s and lows in the 70s.

We are tracking a tropical disturbance that is approaching the eastern Caribbean that will bear watching closely as it moves west over the next week as there are some indications that it could strengthen into a tropical cyclone.

Hot and humid weather to continue.

Hot and humid weather will continue for the Pine Belt for the rest of the week and into the weekend. There is a 40% chance for an afternoon or early evening shower or thunderstorm each day with highs in the 90s and lows in the 70s. By the middle of next week we may see high pressure strengthen over the deep south and that could send our temps soaring into the upper 90s and decreasing our chances for showers and thunderstorms.

As far as the tropics are concerned, we are are watching several tropical waves cross the Atlantic and these will bear watching for development over the next week to ten days.

Tropical Storms Bret and Cindy are moving northeast in the cooler waters of the Atlantic and will eventually dissipate and never have any impact on the U.S. mainland.
