Friday weather update.

No date with Nate!!! As of this morning Tropical storm Nate is still in the southern Gulf of Mexico and all weather models indicate the storm will become a hurricane and then head into Mexico and not pose a threat to the Pine Belt. One must remember that weather is weather and it can change rapidly.

We will track Nate as long as it is in the Gulf and will let you know if any changes in the forecast occur.

The weekend appears to be warm and dry during the day and nice and cool at night.

Rex

Thursday, September 8, 2011

Wednesday weather update.

Very Autumn like weather will persist in the Pine Belt for the next few days with highs in the 80s and lows in the 50s. By the beginning of next week we are expecting temps to return to normal for this time of year with highs back in the lower 90s.

On to the tropics. Tropical storm Maria will likely form today well out in the far eastern Atlantic. Most computer models keep this storm away from the gulf but another system that is currently slowly evolving in the southern Gulf of Mexico may be something that we will have to contend with down the line. It's name will most likely be Nate.

We will keep you posted.

Tuesday, September 6, 2011

The tropics remain active and down the line we will have more tropical issues to posssibly deal with.

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

Tuesday Weather Update.

Our weather will remain dry and hot today and Wednesday but changes are beginning to show up in future forecasts. This morning the weather computer models are indicating that a tropical wave in the western Caribbean will move into the Gulf of Mexico and possibly develop into a tropical storm. Most of the models indicate the system will move towards Texas and that would be great news for them as they are in a severe drought. The system would also pump moisture from the gulf into our area which would increase our rain chances and lower or temps for the upcoming weekend.

We will continue to monitor the system and keep you posted.

The Friday though Sunday period looks cloudy with a chance for showers and thunderstorms and that will help keep our highs down to the 90 degree range.

The tropics remain very active with tropical depression number twelve having formed this morning. The system will likely become Tropical Storm Katia today. Katia will likely become a strong hurricane in the Atlantic this week and will possibly pose a threat to the U.S. in 7-10 days.

Hurricane Irene update.

Irene has become the first hurricane of the 2011 season and poses a serious threat to the east coast of the United States but NOT the gulf coast. The storm may be a category 3 0r 4 when it makes landfall later this week.

We are now in the heart of the hurricane season and more hurricanes are likely to develop over the next month or two. Now would be a good time to make sure that you have your plans in action just in case a hurricane threatens our area down the road.

Our weather for this week will be mainly hot and dry.

Less humid next few days.

A colf front has pushed through the Pine Belt this morning and that will result in less humid conditions for the next few days. Highs today will be in the lower 90s under sunny skies. The good news is that low temps for the next few nights will be in the lower to mid 60s!

The tropics remain active but nothing poses a threat to the Pine Belt as this time.

A cold front this weekend?

Hot and humid weather will prevail today through the weekend but on Sunday a cold front is forecast to sweep though the Pine Belt. One or two severe thunderstorms can't be ruled out as the front passes but the good news is that behind the front we will see less humid conditions for a few days. Highs will remain in the 90s but lows may actually hit the upper 60s early next week!

The tropics remain very active but nothing poses a threat to gulf at the present time but we will continue to monitor the situation.

Tropics becoming very active!

We are now well into the hurricane season and things are really heating up in the Atlantic basin. The National Hurricane Center is watching four areas of interest. Two waves are located off the coast of Africa and another disturbance is located off of the southeast U.S. coast and the other one is the remains of former tropical storm Emily. None of the systems pose a direct threat to the gulf coastal region at this time but will have to monitored-especially the tropical waves near the African coast.

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

Wednesday weather update.

Hot and humid conditions will continue in the Pine Belt today into the weekend with highs in the 90s and lows in the 70s. A few afternoon or early evening showers are thunderstorms can't be ruled out but chances or rather slim.

We are watching a tropical wave off the coast of Africa that could become better organized over the next several days as it tracks west across the Atlantic.

Rex

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

Tuesday weather update.

The same stubborn weather pattern will exist in the Pine Belt for the next week or so. Highs will continue to be in the 90s and lows in the 70s. Most days we will have a slight chance for an afternoon or early evening shower or thunderstorm.

The tropics remain quiet.

Hot and humid weather will contiune to be the main weather focus for the Pine Belt today into the weekend. There will be a slight chance for an afternoon or early evening shower or thunderstorm each day with highs in the mid to upper 90s and lows in the 70s.

The tropics are quiet for the moment.

Rex

Friday, August 5, 2011

Hot and humid but with better rain chances.

Hot and humid weather will continue in the Pine Belt through the weekend but we have increased our chances for afternoon and evening showers and storms and that should hold our highs in the upper 90s. Lows each night will continue to be in the 70s.

Tropical Storm Emily has been downgraded to a tropical low but is forecast to regain tropical storm status in the southern Bahamas but will still have no impact on our weather here in Mississippi.

Temps to reach century mark today and Wednesday.

We could top out near or at 100 this afternoon and around 101 on Wednesday. If you must be outdoors please take frequent breaks and drink plenty of fluids. Please check on the elderly and make sure your animals have plenty of water.

Very hot and humid weather to continue.

Very hot and humid weather is forecast for the Pine Belt for the rest of the week. Highs today are expected to reach the upper 90s and around 100 on Wednesday. Rain chances will be slim to none for the next several days but as we head into the weekend our chances for afternoon and early evening showers and storms will increase.

Tropical Storm Emily continues to move through the Caribbean Sea. At this time the storm does not pose a threat to the our area but that could change as more detailed information is collected on the storm.

Our best advice is to keep tracking the storm along with us until we have a better idea on what track it will take. In the event the storm does not ever pose a threat to us this is still a good time to have your hurricane action plans in place because we are just now entering the most active portion of the hurricane season.

Monday, August 1, 2011

Very hot and humid week ahead.

Strong high pressure will begin to build into our area on Tuesday and will stay firmly in control most of the week. Highs will be in the mid 90s today with a 50% chance for showers and thunderstorms but Tuesday into Saturday shower and thunderstorm chances will be greatly limited and highs will be in the upper 90s to possibly near 100 through that time period. Lows will be in the mid to upper 70s.

We are still tracking a tropical disturbance nearing the Leeward and Windward Islands that is forecast to become Tropical Storm Emily by today or Tuesday. At this time the storm poses no threat to our area but we will continue to monitor it.

Very hot and humid week ahead.

Tropics becoming active!

Tropical storm Don is forecast to move into southern Texas or extreme northeastern Mexico sometime tonight but will quickly dissipate. The storm will have no impact on our weather here in the Pine Belt.

We have a new tropical wave this morning that bears very close watching. The system is 1200 miles east of the Leeward Islands and forecasters at the National Hurricane Center feel that conditions are favorable for it to develop. If it does become a named storm it will be called Emily.

This is about the time of year that the tropics usually become active and now is a good time to have your hurricane action plans in place just in case one happens to threaten our area.

Rex

Thursday, July 28, 2011

Rain chances high for today.

We have a 70% chance for showers and thunderstorms today with highs in the lower 90s. Warmer temps with with smaller chances for rain will enter the weather picture beginning on Sunday and lasting into at least the middle of next week when we could see highs in the upper 90s. Lows will continue to be in the mid 70s.

Tropical Storm Don is moving through the soutwestern gulf and poses no threat to Mississippi.

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

Wednesday morning weather update.

Hot and humid weather will prevail in our area today on into the weekend. We have a chance for showers and thunderstorms each afternoon and early evening but our best chances will likely be today. Highs will continue to be in the 90s and lows in the 70s.

A strong tropical disturbance in the northwestern Caribbean Sea will likely become a tropical depression or storm later today but all reliable computer models indicate that it will move towards Mexico or Texas and have little if any impact on our weather here in south Mississippi.

Rex

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Tuesday weather update.

A very moist and unstable airmass continues to hang over south Mississippi and that will lead to a good chance for more showers and thunderstorms today and Wednesday. Some of the rain could be heavy at times. As we head into the latter portions of the week into the weekend our rain chances may come down a bit but conditions will continue to be muggy with highs in the 90s and lows in the 70s.

Rex

Monday, July 25, 2011

Flash flooding possible today.

Heavy rain over the weekend has left the ground very saturated in the Pine Belt and more heavy downpours are in the forecast for today. The National Weather Service in Jackson has issued a Flash Flood Watch that will begin at noon today and last into the evening hours. No severe weather is forecast but the heavy downpours could cotain a thunderstorm or two. Rain chances will remain rather high for the rest of the week. Highs will be in the 90s and lows in the 70s.

Rex

Friday, July 22, 2011

Friday Weather Update.

We have a rather good chance for mainly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms today and Saturday as the atmosphere remains hot and moist. Highs today into next week will be in the 90s and lows in the 70s.

We are tracking a tropical disturbance that is approaching the eastern Caribbean that will bear watching closely as it moves west over the next week as there are some indications that it could strengthen into a tropical cyclone.

Rex

Thursday, July 21, 2011

Hot and humid weather to continue.

Hot and humid weather will continue for the Pine Belt for the rest of the week and into the weekend. There is a 40% chance for an afternoon or early evening shower or thunderstorm each day with highs in the 90s and lows in the 70s. By the middle of next week we may see high pressure strengthen over the deep south and that could send our temps soaring into the upper 90s and decreasing our chances for showers and thunderstorms.

As far as the tropics are concerned, we are are watching several tropical waves cross the Atlantic and these will bear watching for development over the next week to ten days.

Tropical Storms Bret and Cindy are moving northeast in the cooler waters of the Atlantic and will eventually dissipate and never have any impact on the U.S. mainland.

Rex

Wednesday, July 20, 2011

Wednesday weather update.

It appears that our chances for afternoon and early evening showers and thunderstorms will be better than previously thought. We will go with a 40% chance today through Sunday. Highs will continue to be in the 90s and lows in the 70s. A return to possibly drier and hotter weather is possible early next week.

Rex

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

It will be hotter and dryer to our north

While hot and dry weather will dominate much of the southeast, we could see some relief in the way of afternoon storms. Rain chances will increase as we work towards the weekend. The heat culprit is a dome of high pressure that will sit to our north. We will be on the edge of that dome, which should keep conditions here fairly seasonable

Tropical Storm Bret continues to move away from the U.S. mainland and poses no threat.

Nick

Drier weather to return to the Pine Belt for the next few days.

High pressure is forecast to rebuild over the deep south for the next few days and that will lead to a couple of rain free but hot days and warm and muggy nights. As we head into the latter part of the week into the weekend we will see some increase in our chances for afternoon and early evening showers and thunderstorms but highs will remain in the 90s and lows in the 70s.

Tropical Storm Bret continues to move away from the U.S. mainland and poses no threat to Mississippi.

Rex

Monday, July 18, 2011

Drier weather to return to the Pine Belt.

After the weather system that is currently producing clouds and light rain across our area today moves west this afternoon and evening high pressure is expected to rebuild across the deep south and that will bring a halt to our rather wet weather pattern that we have experienced the past two weeks. Rain chances will be pratically zero on Tuesday and slight chances for the rest of the week.

Tropical Storm "Bret" has formed east of Florida and is forecast to track away from the U.S. mainland and will not threaten Mississippi.

Afternoon weather update !

A brand new video has just been posted at wdam.com for the severe weather and possible flash flooding that is expected to move through our area late this afternoon into the overnight hours. Rex

Heavy rain-severe weather event likely tonight !

A storm system is currently getting ready to move into the Pine Belt this afternoon into tonight and will likely not pass through until Wednesday morning. There is a threat of severe weather with this system tonight which includes isolated strong tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and heavy rain. The main concern with this system is the heavy rain that is expected. Average amounts will range from 2-4 inches with some isolated higher amounts. Due to the heavy rain from last weekend, the ground is already saturated and this is why a Flash Flood Watch has been issued for the viewing area beginning this evening and lasting into Wednesday. We will continue to monitor this developing weather situation. Rex.

Monday, March 7, 2011

Another shot at rain Tuesday and Wednesday-then nicer weather !

Today will be mostly sunny and dry but we will see an increase in clouds on Tuesday with a chance for rain developing. By early Wednesday a front will approach the area bringing with it a good chance for showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms may be heavy. I expect the system to clear the area by Wednesday evening or before and will be followed by much nicer weather Thursday into the weekend. Rex

Friday, March 4, 2011

Umbrellas needed !!

Rain chances will increase as the day wears on here in the Pine Belt. Rain and isolated thunderstorms will be likely by this afternoon and continue into tonight on into Saturday. We may end up with a couple of inches of rain before the system moves out Saturday evening. Much cooler and drier air will arrive on Sunday with highs in the lower 60s under sunny skies. By late Sunday night-early Monday morning we expect temps to fall to the mid 30s. Have a great weekend!! Rex

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

Rain likely Friday through Saturday.

Weather data coming into the weather office this morning indicates that rain and a few thunderstorms will begin developing Friday afternoon and lasting into Saturday evening. At this time the threat of severe weather is low, but that will have to be monitored in later forecasts. The rain will be welcome as we have been quite dry in the past few weeks. A cold front will sweep through early Sunday taking the rain with it followed cooler and drier weather. Rex

Tuesday, March 1, 2011

Nice string of good weather days ahead !

High pressure will dominate our weather today through early Friday. Highs each day will be in the lower 70s and most lows in the 40s. By Friday, we will introduce a 20% chance for a shower with highs still remaining in the lower 70s. By Saturday, a rather strong cold front will approach our area and bring with it a 60% chance for showers and thunderstorms. After the front passes, much cooler air will return to the Pine Belt with highs on Sunday in the upper 50s and lows in the upper 30s. Warmer weather will return by early next week. Rex

Monday, February 28, 2011

Spring like weather for most of the week..but...

A cool front will push through the state later today and a few showers and thunderstorms may develop out ahead of it. After the front clears our area later this evening, we will see clearing skies tonight with lows in the mid 40s. Nice weather is forecast Tuesday through Friday with highs in the lower 70s and most lows in the 40s except upper 30s on Wednesday morning. Another front will approach the area on Saturday and bring with it a chance for showers and thunderstorms. After that front moves through we will see a return to much cooler weather next week with even the possibility of some light freezes ! Rex

Friday, February 25, 2011

Much needed rain in the area overnight !

Finally, some much needed rain fell in portions of our area overnight. We collected .75" in our bucket.Clearing is forecast for today with highs in the lower 70s. Mostly clear skies tonight with lows in the lower 40s. Sunny on Saturday with highs in the mid to upper 70s. A new frontal system will have an impact on our weather beginning Sunday but it looks like the main activity with this system will remain to our north. Although we can't rule out for sure any severe weather in our area on Sunday and Sunday night, it does appear that we will escape the worst of this system. Slightly cooler and drier weather is on tap for most of next week. Have a great weekend ! Rex

Thursday, February 24, 2011

Much needed rain after expected after midnight !

Two seperate weather systems will affect our area over the course of the next several days. The first system will arrive later tonight with the best chances for showers and thunderstorms after midnight. Some of the storms could be heavy but I expect the more severe type storms will remain north of our area. Friday and Saturday promises to be nice with sunny skies and pleasant temps. On Sunday, a very potent weather system will approach the state from the west and it will likely be produce several rounds of severe weather for much of our area. Tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and heavy rain are possible with this system Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. Stay abreast to the latest forecast beginning late Saturday! Rex

Wednesday, February 23, 2011

Much needed rain headed for the area.

Over the next seven days, we will have two seperate weather systems bring a chance for some much needed rain to the Pine Belt. The first, weaker front will bring a 20% chance for showers and possible thunderstorms during the day on Thursday, but those chances will increase to 60% Thursday night and some of storms may be on the heavy side. That system will move through quickly and sunny skies will return for Friday and Saturday. On Monday of next week, a more powerful system will move through the area bringing with it the possibility of severe weather Monday and Monday night followed by much cooler air on Tuesday. Stay tuned ! Rex

Monday, February 21, 2011

Little rain expected for the next week.

The seven day forecast for today through next Sunday indicates only a slight chance for a shower or thunderstorm on Thursday and then a slight chance for rain again on Saturday. Although the days are nice and the nights are mild temperature wise, we certainly could stand some more rain. If you have plans to burn anything outdoors please keep a water hose nearby and pay very close atttention to the fire. Looking ahead into next week, there is the possibility or better chances for rain ! Let's hope so ! Rex

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

Not much rain is site !

With the current weather pattern in place, expect more of the same type weather for the area for at least the next seven days. We do add a slight chance for shower next Monday, but those chances are slim at best. Expect highs to continue to be mainly in the 70s and lows in the 50s, but we could hit 80 on Monday. At this time, we do not see any really cold air headed our way. Rex

Friday, February 11, 2011

Spring like weather on the way !

A weather pattern change will come to North America beginning this weekend resulting in much warmer temps across the eastern portions of the nation. After being in the deep freeze for most of the winter, this change will likely put smiles on many faces. This winter was predicted to be warmer and drier in the deep South due to the La Nina weather pattern that was going on at the time as was forecast to last through the winter. Well, as we all know, weather is weather and it will do what it want's to-not what we forecast it to do. So basically, the weather ignored the La Nina and brought very cold air to most of the nation east of the Rockies. The La Nina now appears to be weakening and that is one of the reasons why we will see a pattern change to much warmer conditons over the next several weeks. What happens in March remains to be seen. Have a great weekend ! Rex

Thursday, February 10, 2011

Cold now but warming trend on the way !!!

We are in for a few more days of chilly days and cold nights but by the weekend we will see a much needed warming trend underway. Under sunny skies expect highs on Saturday to reach the upper 50s and rise to the mid 60s on Sunday. Lows will gradually come up as well, especially by next week. We are currently forecasting 71 by next Wednesday with lows in the 40s. Little if any rain is expected for the next seven days. Enjoy ! Rex

Winter Weather Advisories!!!!

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Jasper, Simpson, Clarke, Smith and Wayne counties beginning at 6:00 PM and ending at 3:00 AM Thursday morning. Snow accumulations of around 1 inch are expected in those areas. Winter Storm Warnings are in effect from Jackson north the the Tennessee state line for this afternoon and tonight. Please check road conditions in those areas before heading in that direction. For the rest of the Pine Belt, light rain is forecast to develop this afternoon with highs in the mid 5os. The rain is forecast to become mixed with or change to light snow before ending after midnight. This is still a developing weather situation and resident are urged to listen to later forecasts. Rex

Tuesday, February 8, 2011

Still a mix of rain and snow possible for the area.

Light rain is forecast to move into the Pine Belt Wednesday afternoon. The rain is expected to become heavier into the evening as temps continue to fall. A rain and snow mix will likely develop in our area before midnight and may linger into the early morning hours of Thursday. At this time there are no winter weather adviories for our viewing area, but there is a winter storm watch for portions of central and northern Mississippi. We will continue to monitor this developing weather situation and update the forecast as needed. Rex

Monday, February 7, 2011

Weather expected for middle of the week.

As it stands right now, a low pressure area is forecast to develop in the gulf on Wednesday. Cold air is forecast to be arriving in south Mississippi at about the same time. If, and the big word is if, there is enough cold air and moisture in place, we could see rain change over to light snow late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. This is an evolving weather event and will have to monitored closely and we will have a better handle on the situation by Tuesday. After the colder weather moves in it should quickly modify and we could see temps rising to the upper 60s by Sunday. Rex

Friday, February 4, 2011

Winter weather event ending...but...

Our current winter weather event is coming to a close and we expect all warnings to be lifted by 9:00 am. The weather for today will pretty much be a cold rain with highs around 40. Cloudy tonight with lows in the upper 20s. Mostly sunny on Saturday with highs in the upper 40s and lows that night in the upper 20s. Super Bowl Sunday looks great with sunny skies and highs around 60 and lows that night in the upper 30s. Slight chance for a shower on Monday with highs in the lower 50s and lows back into the upper 20s. Sunny on Tuesday with highs in the upper 50s and lows near 40. Now to the interesting part. Weather models are hinting at the possibility of a major snow storm to strike the gulf coastal region beginning next Wednesday night into Thursday followed by what could be the coldest weather that we have seen so far this winter !!! PLEASE keep in mind that this forecast is about a week away and much could change but keep the idea in the back of your minds. It has been one crazy winter for the United States, so nothing would suprise me at this point ! Have a great weekend !! Rex

Weather conditions deteriorating fast in south MS !

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, weather and road conditions are beginning to deteriorate. There are cars reportly off the road on I-55 at the Bogue Chitto exit and bridges along highway 49 and 54 in Magee beginning to ice over. Rex

Winter Storm Warning !!

Most of the viewing area is now under a Winter Storm Warning until midnight. Expect periods of rain, freezing rain and sleet throughout the day. Accumulations are expected to range from 1/4 to 1/2 inch and this could cause travel problems. Highs today will remain in the 30s. We have more on this developing weather event as details become available. Rex

Winter weather event possible for our area !

Cold air is in place across the Pine Belt and is forecast to remain here for the next several days. Several weather computer models are indicating the possibility of a winter weather event here in our area beginning after midnight tonight and lasting into Tursday and possibly Friday. At this time it appears the most likely event would be a possible ice storm. This is a develping weather situation and residents are urged to closley monitor future forecasts as more data become available. Rex

Severe weather possible this afternoon followed by colder weather.

A strong cold front will sweep through the Pine Belt this afternoon and early evening bringing with it the possibility of heavy rain, severe thunderstorms and isolated tornadoes. It appears the best time frame for the worst weather willl be between 3:00 and 8:00 pm. Today will also be very windy with gusts as high as 30 mph possible in the afternoon. After the front passes through early this evening, storms will end and much colder air will flow into south Mississippi with lows dropping to the upper 20s and winds out of the northwest at 15-25 mph making it feel even colder. After a brief break on Wednesday, a low pressure area is forecast to develop in the gulf and cold air is expected to be in place in our area and this could result in some type of winter weather event Thursday and Friday. Please keep posted on the latest weather developments this afternoon and on Thursday and Friday. Rex

Wild weather week ahead !

Expect on a slight chance for a shower today and tonight with highs around 70. Tuesday is when things start to get interesting ! A strong cold front will push through the state during the day and evening, arriving in our area Tuesday night. We can expect heavy rain and possible severe storms on Tuesday afternoon and evening. Late Tuesday night the strong front sweeps through followed by much colder weather. The colder weather will last into Friday and several systems are supposed to move through the area during that time. These systems could cause freezing rain late Thursday night and light snow late Friday night which could last into early Saturday morning. Of course these features are several days out and the forecasts could change quite a bit. My advice is to stay tuned ! Rex

Don't put the coats away just yet !

We are in for some delightful weather today and Saturday with sunny skies and highs in the 60s. Clear skies tonight will be the rule with temps in the upper 30s. As we get into the Sunday time frame we will see an increase in clouds with a 50% chance for some rain with highs in the 60s. Things begin to get really interesting next week as temps will be in the lower 70s on Monday!!!! Then, a very potent weather system is set to approach the area by Tuesday bringing with it the possibility of severe weather and heavy rain. Temps will be in the 60s on that day. After the system passes through we will see temps begin to fall into the 50s for highs on Wednesday and then in the 40s on Thursday. The air is forecast to be of Arctic nature, but we are unsure at this time of how far south it will plunge. The further south it goes, the colder it will get here by late next week-so- don't put those coats away just yet ! Have a great weekend ! Rex

Enjoy the slightly warmer temps-they might not last long !

Although today will be sunny and cool with highs in the mid 50s, the next six days or so will be a little warmer. So far, we are having a colder than normal winter and it appears that by the middle of next week, yet another blast of cold Arctic air will invade the south. Snow lovers, don't give up just yet !! Much of February and even March may see temps below normal and with the projected storm paths, all it takes is cold air being in the right place at the right time for us to see a wintry weather setup. Rain on the way !

Low pressure is forming off the Texas coast and will begin moving towards the east and northeast and that will spread a shield of rain into our area beginning this afternoon. The rain should be mostly light in nature before becoming steadily heavier after midnight. There may be one or two rumbles of thunder after midnight as well but no severe weather is forecast at this time. After the system moves east of us on Tuesday clearing will begin Tuesday night and sunny and cool conditions will prevail Wednesday through Friday. Partly cloudy skies on Saturday with highs around 61 and a slight chance for rain on Sunday with highs around 60. Although temps will fall into the the 30s Wednesday through Sunday for overnight lows, no terribly cold air is forecast to return until possibly sometime next week. Rex

No end in sight to the cold !

It's looks like the winter of 2010-11 is going down in the record books as one of the coldest for the nation since the 80s ! At this time there appears to be little change in the forecast of continued below normal temps here in the deep south through at least mid February and possibly lasting on into March. As I stated in my post Thursday, it still appears like there may be several chances of wintry weather problems down the line. As I learn more I will pass the information along. Rex

The Winter that Was !

When the winter forecast was issued last fall for the south, it appeared that the weather patterns were setting things up so that we would have above normal temps and below normal precipitation, after all, it was based on a La Nina winter pattern weather which generally favors those conditions for the southern portion of the United States when that type of pattern is present. Well, so far that has not been the case at all. It now appears that the colder than normal weather will stay with us on into March ! There is even the possibility that we have yet to see the worst of the cold!!! Also, there appears to be a possibility of several snow and or ice events as well. That's what I love about the weather- it is such a misunderstood procees and not an exact science. The best thing to do is to , as I have often said at the end of my blogs, STAY TUNED !!! Rex

Two cold fronts this week.

Two cold fronts will make it through the area this week. The first one will arrive this evening and will be followed by some cooler air, but nothing drastic. The second, stronger front will arrive Thursday night and will be followed by a quick shot of Arctic air that will last Friday through the weekend. How is the rest of the winter shaping up? Well, it appears that cooler than normal conditions could last into March. Will we see a few snow opportunites? I think so !!! Stay tuned. Rex

Warmer for the weekend!

Fianlly, the Arctic grip is letting go of our weather. As the huge dome of cold air slides east, we will see an increase in temps, as well as an increase in moisture that will bring a chance of rain to the area Sunday afternoon in the Tuesday. Highs through that period will be in the 60s and lows in the 40s. Another cold front will slide through by Wednesday resulting in cooler weather, but not nearly as cold as it has been in the last few days. I will have more on February weather thoughts next week. Have a great weekend. Rex

Arctic Blast Arrives !!!

Very cold Arctic air is now entering our area and will persist through at least Friday. Hard freezes are likely tonight through Friday night. We will see a slight warm up over the weekend before another blast of Arctic air arrives next week and there are indications that it may be even colder !! Also, there is the possibility of more than one blast of cold air. We will be looking down the line for some winter weather issues. Nothing on the board at this point but with the weather being as cold as it has been and forecasted to be, something could come along and give us a wintry suprise. Stay warm !!! Rex

More cold to come next week !

We will get a brake from the very cold temps over the upcoming weekend- but that will not last long as yet another Arctic blast is getting ready to invade the deep south by next week. There are indications in the long range forecasts that the rest of the month will be cold with possibly a few more opportunites for more wintry weather. As I always say, Stay tuned !!! Rex

Cold week in store !

The National Weather Service has the viewing area under a Winter Weather Advisory until noon today but I expect very few problems as precip returns on the radar are slim to none. We will see a slow decrease in the cloud cover late this afternoon with highs remaining in the mid 40s. Lows tonight with be in the lower 30s. A new blast of colder air will arrive by Tuesday and that will result in highs through Thursday in the mid 40s and lows each night in the lower 20s. A little warmer weather will begin by Saturday and Sunday with highs rising into the 50s. There will be a slight chance for showers over the weekend as well. Another cold front may bring colder weather again early next week. Rex

Uncertain forecast for the weekend !

A strong low pressure area is forecast to cross the northern gulf on Sunday and Sunday night. At this time it appears the best chance for frozen precip will be over our northern counties and further northward. There are many things that could easily change this forecast. If the low tracks further south in the gulf and colder air gets into place, then the entire viewing area could end up seeing a significant winter weather event. At the least a cold rain is forecast for Sunday and Sunday night but this could easily transition into a winter storm in the form of freezing rain, sleet or snow-or a mixture of all of it. Please stay tuned to WDAM-TV and wdam.com for the latest weather forecasts. I quite frankly think we will not escape this event without seeing some type of frozen precip in the area. Stay tuned !!! Rex

POSSIBLE WILD WEATHER ON THE WAY !!!

There is no question as we go into next week the weather is going to turn much colder. How much colder ? Well the models are coming into better agreement but it is still too early to tell but do be prepared for some cold days and very cold nights. Now the other intersting side of the story. A storm system off the coast of California will begin to work it's way east soon and will arrive in our neck of the woods Sunday into Sunday night. Here is the deal. If there is enough cold air in place and the low tracks south of our area then we may see a serious winter storm ! Models indicate that there will be enough moisture in the air to provide 1-2 inces of rain or more. That's fine if it falls in temps above freezing but if it occurs in below freezing temps that could result in ice and sleet accumulations of 1 half inch to an inch and that would be bad. On the other hand if the temps are cold enough through all of the air columns then the precip would fall as snow resulting in an amazing 5-15 inches of SNOW!!! WOW!!! I am urging you to keep abreast of every forecast that comes from this station over the next few days. I will take care of the morning forecasts, Nick will have the evening updates and Kelly will have the weekends. Who knows, we may all end up here if it really gets serious !!! Please keep in mind this forecast is still evloving and many differant soloutions are possible. I urge you to keep up with every forecast for the next several days. Rex

A lesson on weather models.

Next week is going to be cold ! Please be prepared for it ! The current weather models are notorious for not being able to predict shallow, cold air masses and I think this is the case for the expected temps around here next week. Please keep in mind as we get closer to the weekend, the models will begin to latch on to the expected cold, so don't be suprised if it turns out to be colder than what is currently being advertised in our seven day forecast. Stay tuned ! Rex

MAJOR COLD BLAST POSSIBLE MID MONTH!!

For about the next week to ten days we are going to basically see normal to slightly below normal temps in our area but all the major forecast models are indicating that by mid month-say around the 12th through the 20th- a huge mass of Siberian air will invade much of the nation including the deep south. There are hints at some type of winter weather event or two with this outbreak of cold air. Could it mean snow or possibly and ice storm for us ? Well it is much too early to tell at this point but I urge everyone to pay very close attention to the weather over the next two weeks. One forecast model that I saw yesterday indicated lows in our area of around 10 degrees with highs in the 20s on or near the 18th of January. Please keep in mind that this is a long range forecast that is apt to change but all indications are there of some really interesting weather headed our way down the line. I will keep you updated on this event as each day unfolds with newer information. BBRRR!!! Rex
